Ted: My daughter is going to college.
Keith: That's great, but it must be expensive.
Ted: Yes, but she has a grant.
Keith: A grant? What's a grant?
Ted: The government is giving her money.
Keith: To pay for her education?
Ted: That's right.
Keith: Does it pay for everything?
Ted: No, she has a loan, too.
Keith: What's the difference between a loan and a grant?
Ted: You have to pay back a loan; a grant is a gift.

The word “google” has many uses. It is an adjective, used to describe very large numbers. It is also a proper noun. “Google” is the name of a popular Internet search engine. It also has a new meaning.

The writers of a new edition of a dictionary have used it as a verb. They list "google" as a verb. It means to search the Internet. This makes terms like "google me" part of the English language. A person could say "I wanted to know more about volcanoes so I googled it." "Google" is now an official part of the English language. The dictionary's editors say that this just means that the public has adopted the term.

"Google" is one of 100 new words that were included in the new dictionary. Many other words are based on technology. "Mouse potato" is someone who spends a lot of time in front of a computer. "Ringtone" is the sound of a cell phone ringing.

Many new technology words have become common. We use them every day and don’t even think about them.

AIDS

(before 2003)

Read the story. Click the "LISTEN" button at the bottom of the page to hear the story. When you are done, click the "NEXT" button.

AIDS is a disease that kills people. It is caused by a germ. It is spread by sharing drug needles or having sex. All people are at risk. A person with AIDS can get sick in different ways. Half of the people who have gotten AIDS have died. There is no cure, but you can protect yourself from getting the disease.

You can avoid AIDS by knowing your sex partner well. Talk to them about it and ask them personal questions about themselves. Do not have sex with a person who has had the virus or used needles for drugs. Sex is safest if you and your partner are AIDS-free and only have sex with each other. Always use proper protection during sex.

Another way to avoid AIDS is to never share needles. If you must share, always clean the needle and the syringe to kill the AIDS virus. Doing without drugs will lower your risk of getting AIDS.

AIDS is not spread by everyday contact. You do not get AIDS from food, sneezing, telephones, social kissing, toilets, hugging, swimming pools or giving blood

Married Life

When we talk about married life, we talk about the good and the bad. In this lesson, I will teach you the English you need to know to communicate how you feel about your married life. If you are not married, then at least you can learn this lesson to speak about your opinions on your friends married life.

We will not go into detail about conversation between married couple. Mostly, couples talk about the same thing in a routine. But when you talk to friends, it's very different.

Girl talking to friends

"How is married life?"
"How is your husband doing?"
"What do you guys do for fun?"

Some responses I've heard

"I love my married life. My husband and I get a long so well."
"He is so helpful. He does the dishes for me and helps around the house a lot."
"It was fun in the beginning, but now we are in a regular routine."

"Everything is great, but he's a little lazy. One time he was watching TV and he called me when I was in the kitchen and asked me to get the remote control for him that was 6 feet away."

"All he does is watch TV. I don't understand how a person can watch so much television."

"Since we're both working, we don't have much time for each other. But we get to spend the weekend together and that is always good."

"Since I'm working also, we go out to eat a lot because I don't have time to cook."

"My husband is working at a consulting firm. He is always at work. I get bored a lot so I'm trying to find some hobbies."
"My husband works at Microsoft. He gets home late and when he comes home, he's too tired to do anything. I'm thinking about starting a career because I have so much extra time."
"My husband is in school right now. He's finishing his PHD."

He has trouble getting acting jobs because he is very difficult to work with. He goes to see his agent, George Fields, whose job is to get him acting jobs.  Sydney Pollock plays the agent.

Fields:"Nobody will hire you."

Dorsey: "Are you saying that nobody in New York will work with me?"

Niagara Falls

I live in Niagara Falls.
Niagara Falls is a famous place.
A lot of tourists visit here every year.
Most of the tourists come to see the waterfalls.
The waterfalls are very beautiful and powerful.
At night they shine lights on the falls that make them even more dramatic.
Tourists line up against the railings to watch the water as it tumbles into the Niagara
River.
There are other things in Niagara Falls that the tourists like to visit.
There are a lot of gift shops and museums.
There are many hotels that the tourists can stay at.
Tourism is very important to Niagara Falls.
Many people work in the tourism industry.
There are many jobs in the tourism industry.
You can take a special bus and tour Niagara Falls.
You can ride in a horse-drawn carriage in Niagara-on-the-Lake, or you can take a balloon
ride over the falls from the American side.
You can even ride in a helicopter over the falls.
Niagara Falls is very busy in the summertime.
Summer is the time when most tourists visit here.
Sometimes the tourists think it raining near the falls, but it is only the mist that rises from
the mighty waterfalls.
There are many legends and stories connected to Niagara Falls.
There is a special legend called "The Maid of the Mist."
There are stories about the daredevils who thought that they were more powerful than
the falls.
Some of them went over the falls in barrels, and others walked on tightropes over the
falls.
Both of those things are very dangerous.
I stay behind the railings when I look at the falls.
I know just how powerful the falls are.
It is interesting to discover all the stories that there are about Niagara Falls

Who Put Lipstick on That Pig

Who Put Lipstick on That Pig
Expressions about pigs, hogs and sows. Transcript of radio broadcast:

Now, the VOA Special English program, WORDS AND THEIR STORIES.

(MUSIC)

Americans often use expressions about animals.

In two thousand eight, the main candidates for president each used this expression: "You can put lipstick on a pig, but it is still a pig." This means that it is a waste of time to change something from ugly or unpleasant-looking to beautiful.

There are other expressions about improving a pig's appearance, like this one: "A hog in a silk waistcoat is still a hog." Hogs are similar to pigs, only bigger. Americans use many other expressions about pigs, hogs and female hogs called sows. Like this one: "You cannot make a silk purse out of a sow's ear." This means you cannot create something valuable from something that has no value.

In a pig's eye is another unusual expression. It means something that is not so, or will never happen. Then there is the expression casting pearls before swine. That means wasting something valuable on someone who will not be thankful or care about it.

However, at least one kind of pig can be useful in saving money. It is called a piggy bank. You can buy a small container shaped like a pig. It has a hole where a child can put money into it.

Hogs are very large animals. If you say you ate high on the hog during a holiday, it means you ate very good or costly food. If you went whole hog on your trip, it means you did everything possible to have fun. But you should never go hog-wild at any time because that means behaving badly.

Hogs take up a lot of space but people should not take up more than their share. If one of your children is taking up too much space sitting in front of the television, other children might say: "Do not hog the couch." And a road hog is a driver who uses more than his share of the road. Such a driver increases dangers for other drivers.

Pig terms are also used in American politics. Farmers mark their pigs' ears to identify them. In politics, earmarks are money set aside for projects in a congressman's home state or locality. And politicians might say there is a lot of pork in a budget proposal, meaning wasteful spending.

In many areas, pigs provide ham, bacon and other pork products to eat. All Americans want to be able to bring home the bacon. That means to earn enough money to provide the necessities of life. Experts say this term was first used in the nineteen twenties. But it is believed to come from the much older game of catching a greased pig. This was a popular event at country fairs in which the winner was awarded the pig.

The Peach Orchard
When I was very young, I lived near a peach orchard.
Now, there is a park where the orchard used to be.
I always remember the peach orchard because my grandmother and I used to go there
and pick peaches.
The owner of the orchard would let all the neighbors pick peaches.
It's not the fact that I used to get many ripe, tasty peaches that I remember; it's the time
that I used to spend with my grandmother that I remember.
My grandmother was very old, but she was very healthy.
She used to walk a lot.
I think that is what kept her fit.
She had a lot of energy so she liked to go to a lot of places.
She would get a fruit basket, and then she would ask me if I wanted to go to the orchard.
I always said yes because I enjoyed walking through the orchard on a sunny day.
We never climbed up on a ladder to reach the peaches;
we just reached for the low hanging fruit.
My grandmother and I used to talk all the time that we were out there.
It was nice to spend time with her.
She told me many stories about when she was a young girl.
We laughed and got to know each other better.
My grandmother only visited us during the summer.
She lived in California, and I lived in Niagara Falls, so we didn't get to spend a lot of time
with each other.
We enjoyed the hot summer days in the orchard.
You could smell the peaches, and the bees buzzed lazily by us.
My grandmother would point out different insects and birds to me.
I learned a lot about nature from her.
We would end up with a big basket of peaches.
When we got home, my mother would wash the peaches, and often she would bake a
peach pie for us.
Nobody bakes a peach pie like my mother.
It's good to have memories like that.
Childhood memories of time spent with my grandmother are very precious to me.
Sometimes, it's just the simple things that you do in life that leave you with the nicest
memories
.

On New Year's Day people start a new year.

Many people make resolutions.

They resolve to be better people.

Some people decide that they will lose weight so that they can be healthier.

Some people decide to give up smoking.

They also want to be healthier.

There are all kinds of resolutions that people make.

Some people try not to lose their tempers.

Some people say that they will work harder.

There are people who try to give up bad habits.

Every year, my brother says that he will stop biting his nails.

He stops biting his nails in January, but by February he always starts again.

That is the thing about New Year's resolutions.

People seldom keep them.

Everybody starts out with good intentions, but it is very hard to stick with them.

I don't make New Year's resolutions.

I find that I just break them.

I just work day by day to break my bad habits.

I know that I eat too many sweets.

Every day, I just try to resist them.

I think that every day is a new day regardless of whether it is New Year's Day or not.

Bad habits are hard to break.

The best thing is never to start any bad habits.

I don't know if my brother will ever stop biting his nails, but I know that each January he intends to stop.

Maybe one of these New Year's Days he'll get over that habit.
