When you want a simple, warm meal that will fill you up and make you feel like a kid again, nothing beats a little home cooking.

Home cooking is food like your mom used to make when you were a kid. In the United States, home cooking is often heavy food with lots of carbs, like mac n’ cheese or mashed potatoes. It may be fattening, but it’s so tasty, you just have to clean your plate.

Hear Devan and Mason talk about their love of home cooking.

Giving Gifts

Intro

“It’s the thought that counts.” That’s what we say when someone gives us a gift that we don’t want or that doesn’t suit us. It’s a nice way of saying, “I appreciate you, even though I don’t really appreciate this gift.”

But how much does the thought really count? It can’t count as much as an awesome present would count, right?

It depends on who you talk to. Some people think presents aren’t very important, or get stressed out trying to pick out gifts for their friends. But others believe that giving gifts shows how much you care. They look for presents that are special and personal, and they might get hurt if their friends don’t do the same. Hear Amy and Ella talk about giving gifts.

Intro

Getting old is bad enough without having to worry about whether or not you’ll lose your job because of a couple of extra wrinkles. But in Hollywood, that’s exactly what can happen.

Actresses in particular have trouble getting roles as they age. Women who were once the stars of everything from dramas to romantic comedies suddenly find that they can only get cast as younger actresses’ mothers.

On the other hand, some stars don’t hit their prime until they become a little more mature. Find out what Marni and Mason think about getting old in Hollywood.

role n.

Definition

part in a movie or play

Example

Brad Pitt's role in the movie Ocean's Eleven was really cool. He was a good character.

Brad Pitt's role in the movie Ocean's Eleven was really cool. He was a good character.

wrinkles n.

Definition

when skin creases with aging

Example

I couldn't believe he was 58 years old. He didn't have any wrinkles!

craft n.

Definition

talent or skill

Example

Jeff has perfected his craft. He's the best brick layer in town.

exception to the rule expr.

Definition

one thing that is different from the rest

Example

Most sorority girls I know are really annoying, but Michelle is the exception to the rule.

sustain v.

Definition

keep something going

Example

I can run short distances well, but I can't sustain a good speed for more than a couple miles.

age v.

Definition

get older

Example

Marissa has aged really well.

Dialogue

Marni: Mason, do you think it’s true what they say, that you can’t get old in Hollywood?

Mason:  I don’t know. I actually think that some of the people, comedians particularly, that I have been following have not had a lot of success until they’re, you know, almost 40 or so. But what were you thinking about?

Marni:  Well I guess I was thinking of, you know, actresses in particular who find it harder to get roles as they age and start getting wrinkles.

Mason:  I mean, I find it’s really about if you start as a young actor or actress, it is very hard to sustain your career. Like think of Haley Joel Osment, the kid from A.I. and The Sixth Sense. I think he’s kinda done. And I think there are other people who don’t find their real success until later in life. There’s an actress I like a lot named Patricia Clarkson...

Marni:  She’s great.

Mason:  ...Who gets a lot of great work and great roles now, but like didn’t really have anything major until she was in her forties or so.

Marni:  So there’s always those kind of exceptions to the rule, and then you have those classic actresses and actors like Meryl Streep and Jack Nicholson who don’t seem to have that problem, I mean they keep getting really interesting roles. So I think it’s all about, you know, the craft and about your talent, I guess.

Discussion

Marni thinks it is hard to get old in Hollywood, especially if you’re a woman. But Mason disagrees. He thinks that some actors and actresses’ careers get better as they get older. He says that this is especially true for comedians.

Mason also says that aging in Hollywood is harder for actors and actresses who became famous when they were very young. He mentions one actor who was a star as a child and now has a harder time getting good roles.

There are also some actors who are considered classic and who continue to get good roles despite their age. Marni mentions Meryl Streep and Jack Nicholson. But she thinks they are exceptions to the rule. In general, getting old in Hollywood isn’t easy.

Do you think Hollywood prefers younger actors and actresses? Is it hard to get old in your profession?

Grammar Point

Zero Conditional

Mason thinks that if you start as a young actor or actress, it is very hard to sustain your career. This is an example of the zero conditional.

The zero conditional is used to talk about general truths, or things that are almost always true under certain conditions.

Zero conditional is easy to form because all the verbs are in present tense. You just use two clauses, one with If + simple present verb and the other with another simple present verb, as in, “If you are a woman, it is harder to get old in Hollywood.”

Which is correct, “If he doesn’t get a role, he feels sad” or “If he won’t get a role, he feels sad”?

Quiz

  1. Mason thinks some actors don’t find a lot of success until they are around __.

  2. Marni thinks it’s hard for actresses to get roles once they start getting __.

  3. An actress Mason likes named Patricia Clarkson didn’t get great roles until she was in her __.

  4. Marni says __ is a classic actor.

  5. Mason says it’s hard to sustain your career if you __ as a young actor.

Nuclear Power

http://www.englishbaby.com/dynamic/standard_lessons/image/0000/0002/2023/2023015_1300404689_339353.jpg

Mar 18 2011

Intro

The huge earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan recently have had many devastating effects for that country and its people. One of the most frightening effects of the disaster has been a nuclear crisis at the Fukushima power plant.

The crisis at Fukushima has made many people wonder about the safety of nuclear power. It is a clean source of energy, and major accidents are rare. But when problems do occur, as rare as they might be, they can cause terrible destruction. Find out if Marni and Mason think nuclear power is worth the risk

devastating adj.

Definition

destructive, ruining, overwhelming

The Hulk was a devastating character in the movie. He destroyed everything he saw.

security n.

Definition

protection, safety, help

Example

We need some security cameras in order to protect the house at night.

evacuate v.

Definition

Example

Nearly 200,000 people were _evacuated_ before the volcano erupted.

meltdown n.

Definition

Example

contaminated adj.

Definition

Example

If you drink contaminated water, you will get very sick.

.

Dialogue

Marni: Mason, I am totally freaking out.

Mason:  Do you have Bieber fever?

Marni:  No, this is serious actually, this is quite serious. So, you know about the horrible earthquake in Japan, obviously?

Mason:  Yeah.

Marni:  And no there’s been an explosion at one of the nuclear power plants, and they’re predicting there could be nuclear fallout in Japan, and, you know, the winds carry that contaminated air right over the Pacific, into our lovely area. So, not only is it horrible for the people in that area but it could also have horrible ramifications for everyone, all over the globe!

Mason:  Yeah, it doesn’t sound awesome, but I mean, you know, it’ll probably work out OK.

Marni:  Are you serious? I mean, don’t you think a huge meltdown and evacuations is cause for panic and alarm?

Mason:  I mean, it’s not the best, but, you know…I mean, it’s not like the nuclear power plants of today are like the ones of 40 years ago. They’ve done a few things, they’ve got more security measures. People are better equipped to respond in these scenarios, I’d like to think.

Marni:  I don’t know, I’m pretty freaked out.

Mason:  At this point, we just hope for the best, right?

Marni:  I guess. God, you’re optimistic.

Discussion

Marni is worried about nuclear fallout crossing the Pacific Ocean and contaminating the air where she lives. But Mason doesn’t think she should worry. He is optimistic that everything will turn out OK in Japan and the rest of the world.

Marni thinks nuclear power is unsafe. She is worried about the dangers of nuclear power, not only in Japan but throughout the world. But Mason thinks nuclear power plants are much safer today than they used to be. He isn’t as worried as Marni about the dangers of nuclear power.

Do you think nuclear power is safe? Should we stop using nuclear power?

Grammar Point

Present Progressive Tense

Marni says “I am freaking out right now.” This is an example of the present progressive tense.

We use the present progressive to talk about actions that are in progress right now. Right now, Marni is freaking out.

The present progressive is formed with be + verb + ing. Marni later says, “They are predicting there could be nuclear fallout in Japan.”

Which is correct, “I am reading about nuclear power” or “I am read about nuclear power”?

Quiz

  1. Marni is worried about __.

  2. Marni believes that radiation from Japan could reach the US through __.

  3. Mason says the nuclear power plants of today are better than those from __ years ago.

  4. Mason believes that nuclear facilities are __ than in the past.

The word “google” has many uses. It is an adjective, used to describe very large numbers. It is also a proper noun. “Google” is the name of a popular Internet search engine. It also has a new meaning.

The writers of a new edition of a dictionary have used it as a verb. They list "google" as a verb. It means to search the Internet. This makes terms like "google me" part of the English language. A person could say "I wanted to know more about volcanoes so I googled it." "Google" is now an official part of the English language. The dictionary's editors say that this just means that the public has adopted the term.

"Google" is one of 100 new words that were included in the new dictionary. Many other words are based on technology. "Mouse potato" is someone who spends a lot of time in front of a computer. "Ringtone" is the sound of a cell phone ringing.

Many new technology words have become common. We use them every day and don’t even think about them.

"pick someone up"

http://www.englishbaby.com/dynamic/slang_lessons/image/0000/0001/1988/1988008_1296598643_477862.jpg

Feb 17 2011

Quote

“You know how after a certain period of time, you feel comfortable with someone? That didn’t happen with her…I still feel like I’m trying to pick her up.”

- Actor Simon Baker talking about his wife. (tv dot com)

Meaning

get a stranger to go on a date with you

Use

Most husbands don’t need to pick up their own wives. That’s usually something you try to do with a stranger you’ve never met before. When a guy tries to pick up a girl at a party, he goes up to her and starts talking to her, and tries to be as charming as possible. If he succeeds, he might get her phone number or convince her to go on a date with him.

Simon Baker, who stars in the The Mentalist, says he still feels like he’s trying to pick his wife up. But that doesn’t mean that they don’t know each other. It just means he still feels nervous around her sometimes, and wants to impress her.

There are different ways you can try to pick someone up. Some think it’s best to just be yourself and try to get to know the other person. Others like to use pick up lines, or cheesy compliments. Has anyone ever tried to pick you up? What do you think is the best way to pick someone up?

Examples

“Melissa got picked up at a wedding last weekend.”

“Tom picked his girlfriend up at a friend’s party.”

“Martin is so good at picking girls up at bars.”

IPA

Secretariat

 Nov 24 2010 Intro

It may not be as American as baseball, but horse racing is a sport with a long history in the US. The first racetrack was built in 1665, long before baseball was even invented. These days, there are two different stereotypes of horse racing. One involves rich people in fancy hats and expensive summer clothes sipping iced tea while they watch a derby. The other image of horse racing involves desperate people hoping to make a killing by gambling on the races. The new movie Secretariat shows a different side of horse racing altogether. Dialogue

Devan: So, I know you’re about to tie the knot soon. Are you excited?

Amy:  I am.

Devan:  I saw the preview for that movie The Romantics, about the girl that’s getting married and her friends coming home for the wedding.

Amy:  Right, with Katie Holmes.

Devan:  Yeah. And I guess in the preview it looks like two have long rivaled over the groom.

Amy:  Interesting.

Devan:  Is there anything like that, did any of your old friends have crushes on your fiance or anything?

Amy:  Not as far as I know. My best friend is dating my fiance’s best friend. So there is some potential for a little bit of drama, but most of my old friends, you know, have only met my fiance recently. So…

Devan:  So are you still friends with most of your friends from college?

Amy:  Yeah, I have a lot of old friends. None of them live close to me anymore, but we actually just got together for sort of a reunion. It was interesting because we’re pretty different but we’re still really close. What about you, are you friends with your college friends?

Devan:  Yeah, it’s kind of the same thing where we don’t have anything in common anymore, but we still have our past in common and that’s what keeps us together.

Amy:  Well it’s true that there’s nothing like a wedding to bring out sort of crazy weird emotions and conflicts that you didn’t know were there before, so I’m kind of interested in seeing this movie, but also a little afraid.
Discussion

In The Romantics, a group of college friends reunites for a wedding. But the occasion isn’t purely a happy one, because one of the friends, played by Katie Holmes, used to be in love with the groom.

Amy is getting married soon, and Devan asks her if she thinks there will be any conflicts like that at her wedding. Amy doesn’t think that any of her friends will bring emotional baggage to the wedding. But she thinks that weddings often bring out unexpected conflicts and emotions.

Both Devan and Amy are still close with their college friends. But they don’t have much in common with these old friends anymore. Even though they have changed and grown apart, they still share a strong bond because of everything they shared in the past.

Are you still close with your old friends? Have you ever been to a wedding where something dramatic happened?
Grammar Point

Adjectives

Amy says that her reunion with her old friends was interesting. Later, she says that she is interested in seeing The Romantics.

Both interested and interesting are adjectives. But although they look similar, they have different meanings and we use them in different ways.

Interesting means compelling or intriguing. Adjectives with “ing” like interesting cause an emotion. For example, when a movie is interesting, it affects you and makes you think.

Adjectives with “ed” like interested are used to describe the receiver of an emotion. For example, if you are interested in seeing a movie, you experience a feeling of curiosity and excitement about going to the movie.

Which is correct, “I don’t like this movie, it’s very bored” or “I don’t like this movie, it’s very boring”?

Christina Aguilera

Sep 20 2010

Intro

Of all the teen pop princesses of the ‘90s, Christina Aguilera has done the best job of evolving and maturing as an artist. And unlike some of her contemporaries, such as Britney Spears, she’s managed to avoid any major scandals in her personal life. Or at least she’s done a better job of keeping them private.

It’s hard to believe it, but Christina has been around for more than 10 years. Her first hit, “Genie in a Bottle,” came out in 1998, when she was only 18. In 2008 Christina released a collection of her greatest hits from the past ten years of her career. Now, after a four year break from the studio, Christina has released an all-new album, Bionic. Find out what Ella and Amy think about Christina’s return to the pop charts.

Dialogue

Ella: Christina’s back. Are you ready?

Amy:  I’m…I think so, I don’t know. Has she changed her style a lot, or is it kind of like the old stuff?

Ella:  I like the music. I feel like it’s pretty similar to what we’ve heard in the past, but her image…everyone seems to be picking on her, saying she’s copying Lady Gaga and stuff. But if you look at her, she’s always been the odd card in the business. She’s always pushing that already.

Amy:  She really has.

Ella:  But she has just been dormant for four years, so it doesn’t seem like she’s been up to much.

Amy:  Well, she’s been having babies and being…getting married, right? I love how she married that guy who’s kind of unattractive.

Ella:  Yeah, exactly.

Amy:  And they just seem to have a normal, quiet life unlike some of these other pop stars who have a new scandal every minute. She seems like a pretty upstanding citizen.

Ella:  She has a couple new songs, the “Not Myself Tonight” just came out, and that was the one I think she got a lot of negative feedback for, ‘cause it’s very like S & M, copying Lady Gaga. It’s just like…it’s different with Christina Aguilera ‘cause she’s a mom, so you don’t want to see her in those types of situations when it’s like, Lady Gaga, well, yeah, she used to work in a drag bar.

Amy:  Yeah. And maybe it seems like Christina’s faking it a little bit more, ‘cause she has this contrast between her wild musical persona and her private life, which seems so quiet and ordinary.

Ella:  Yeah.

Twilight: Eclips

Sep 15 2010

Intro

When two guys are in love with the same girl, and the girl has to choose which guy she wants to be with, we call it a love triangle. Love triangles make great plot lines for films because they come with plenty of romance and suspense. Throw in a few werewolves and vampires, and you’ve got yourself one exciting movie. Actually, you’ve got Twilight.

The first two movies in the Twilight series were big hits. Now the third chapter, Twilight: Eclipse, is here. In the new movie, Bella has to choose between her love for the vampire Edward and her friendship with the werewolf Jacob. And not just Bella, but Twilight fans are choosing, too, whom they love best. Find out if Jason and Devan are on Team Edward or Team Jacob.

Break A Leg

Sep 14 2010

Intro

The day of your big performance is finally here. You’ve been practicing every day for months. Just as you’re about to walk out on stage, your friend says to you, “Break a leg!”

What?

Surprisingly, when you say “break a leg” to a performer, it means “good luck”. Why not just say, “Good luck”? There’s an old superstition among actors and musicians that saying “good luck” actually brings bad luck. So they say, “Break a leg!”

Jason is about to go play a concert with his band. Watch what happens after his girlfriend Devan tells him to break a leg.

Construction

Sep 03 2010

Intro

Along with dentists and tax collectors, construction workers must have one of the most hated professions. What they do is essential, but it’s also pretty annoying. Whether it’s waking us up early, delaying traffic or forcing us to take a detour, construction disturbs our day-to-day lives in countless ways. On the other hand, without the hard work of construction workers, our cities would fall apart!

Summer is the worst season when it comes to construction. Most construction work is done then, when it’s more likely that the work won’t get delayed by bad weather. Ella and Jeff are both fed up with all the construction happening in their city right now. Find out how they’re managing to grin and bear it.

Hats

Aug 27 2010

Intro

It used to be that no outfit was complete without a hat. From men’s bowlers to women’s bonnets decorated with ribbons and flowers, hats were both a must-have fashion accessory and a functional part of every wardrobe.

Hats keep us warm in the winter and protect us from the heat in the summer. They keep the rain off our heads and the sun out of our eyes. Yet since our way of dressing has become more casual, hats have become less essential. Lucky for milliners everywhere, Ella wants to revive the lost art of hat-wearing.

Have you ever been accused of something you didn’t do? It’s a hard situation to be in. Of course you want to convince everyone you’re innocent. But if you react too strongly, it may make you seem more likely to be guilty.

If you’re accused of something you didn’t do, it can make you feel isolated. Luckily, the four members of the A-Team have each other. The A-Team is a new movie based on an ‘80s TV show about a team of highly trained soldiers who are unjustly convicted of a crime. They have to go out on their own and try to prove their innocence.

The film updates the setting of the story from the Vietnam War to Iraq, but the character B. A. Baracus still has his famous mohawk. Marni was a big fan of the TV show. Listen to her discuss the new movie with Amy

But there are downsides to owning a house, too. It is a big responsibility. There’s a lot that can go wrong in a house, and when you own your own place, it’s up to you to fix any problems that come up.

Mason recently bought a house. But as you’re about to hear, he has mixed feelings about being his own landlord.

Married Life

When we talk about married life, we talk about the good and the bad. In this lesson, I will teach you the English you need to know to communicate how you feel about your married life. If you are not married, then at least you can learn this lesson to speak about your opinions on your friends married life.

We will not go into detail about conversation between married couple. Mostly, couples talk about the same thing in a routine. But when you talk to friends, it's very different.

Girl talking to friends

"How is married life?"
"How is your husband doing?"
"What do you guys do for fun?"

Some responses I've heard

"I love my married life. My husband and I get a long so well."
"He is so helpful. He does the dishes for me and helps around the house a lot."
"It was fun in the beginning, but now we are in a regular routine."

"Everything is great, but he's a little lazy. One time he was watching TV and he called me when I was in the kitchen and asked me to get the remote control for him that was 6 feet away."

"All he does is watch TV. I don't understand how a person can watch so much television."

"Since we're both working, we don't have much time for each other. But we get to spend the weekend together and that is always good."

"Since I'm working also, we go out to eat a lot because I don't have time to cook."

"My husband is working at a consulting firm. He is always at work. I get bored a lot so I'm trying to find some hobbies."
"My husband works at Microsoft. He gets home late and when he comes home, he's too tired to do anything. I'm thinking about starting a career because I have so much extra time."
"My husband is in school right now. He's finishing his PHD."

Decisions can be hard. No one wants to make a bad decision or miss an opportunity, but if it’s not immediately clear what to do, how do you figure it out?

Ella has realized that it’s time to make a decision about Mason. She has been leading him on long enough. He’s a nice guy, but her feelings for him aren’t very strong. She doesn’t want to miss out on a good relationship, but she also doesn’t want to miss out on someone better. She could go either way. She is on the fence, so she asks Jeff for some advice.

Jonah Hex

Jul 28 2010

Intro

The British have knights. The Japanese have ronin. The Argentinians have gauchos. And the Americans have the western.

Westerns are stories about cowboys in the 1800s. A new movie called Jonah Hex updates this common theme in film.

Like many westerns, Jonah Hex is a story of gunfights, romance and revenge. But the guns are bigger, the girl is sexier and the main character, who is played by Josh Brolin (of No Country for Old Men), has a scar on one whole side of his face to make sure you never forget why he’s out for revenge.

The Old West is also a time that people like to romanticize and imagine to be better than it was. In Jonah Hex, the hero even has super powers. See if Ella and Mason are caught up in the magic of the film.

fight

Jul 23 2010
Intro

There are a couple different ways to end an argument. You could try to resolve your differences with a nice, rational conversation. Or you could start swinging.

Getting in a brawl may not be the most civilized way to resolve a dispute. But sometimes it is the most effective. Just make sure your opponent left his brass knuckles at home.

Listen to Dale and Beren throw down about throwing down.

Dialogue

Dale: Would you ever get into a fist fight?
Beren:  I’ve actually never been in a fist fight, like as an adult. I don’t think I would. I don’t have it in me. I’ve been punched. But I kind of deserved it.
Dale:  Do you think you would ever duke it out, like you’re angered so much that you really go, “Let’s step outside!”
Beren:  I don’t know. Do you think it’s a good way to settle an argument? Because I don’t. I feel like it would just make things, you know, more heated. But I think it’s a difference between like being a woman and men. I feel like maybe guys would get a punch in and then get over it, that’s all that needs to be said.
Dale:  If someone punched me, I definitely would punch him back.
Beren:  Yeah. And then would you be over it, or would you…?
Dale:  I think that I would definitely get into a fight. But I don’t think I’ve ever had any…I’ve never been punched. I pretty much…I’m a diplomat. But if it has to come down to it, to protect my family, to protect myself, I’m definitely down to throw down and duke it out. Go nuts.
Beren:  If it comes to fisticuffs, you’re ready to go.
Dale:  Just keep throwin’ the left and right!
Discussion
Beren has never been in a fight, and doesn’t think she ever would. She thinks duking it out isn’t a good way to resolve a conflict. In her opinion, punching someone would probably just make an argument worse.

Dale hasn’t been in a fight either. Normally, he’s a pretty peaceful guy. But if he had to, he wouldn’t be afraid to throw a few punches. Beren thinks men might be more likely than women to try to resolve a conflict with a physical fight.

Have you ever gotten in a fight? Do you think duking it out is a good way to resolve an argument?

Grammar Point
Second Conditional

Dale says that if someone punched him, he would punch them back. This is an example of the second conditional.

We form the second conditional with two clauses. One clause uses if + past tense verb. The second clause uses would + verb. For example, “If someone attacked me, I would fight back.” You can also switch the order of the clauses. You can say “I would fight back if someone attacked me.”

The second conditional describes an unreal situation and its imagined consequences. The “if” clause refers to the unreal situation. The “would” clause refers to the imagined consequences.

Which is correct, “If he hit me I wouldn’t hit him back” or “If he hit me I don’t hit him back”?

"Eye To Eye" - Sheryl Crow

Her popular and timeless mix of folk, rock and country has some great slang in the lyrics, so we asked her to teach a phrase from her new album, 100 Miles From Memphis, which comes out this week.

Since her huge hit “All I Wanna Do” in 1994, Sheryl has won 9 Grammy awards for her recordings. Devan:  Yeah, you have to have the perfect amount of booze in you and then you can play just right?

Jeff:  It’s a fine line to walk.

Devan:  Do you like any other bar games, like do you like to play darts or ping pong or foosball?

Jeff:  Ping pong’s fun, but not usually at a bar. It’s a little out of control.

Devan:  Yeah, have you ever had a bar game get ugly? Like playing with a stranger, get in a fight?

Jeff:  No, I can’t say I have.

Devan:  It seems like you could be walking a fine line there when you’re drinking alcohol and you’re playing competitive games. It seems like that could be really fun, or it could become really competitive and drinking can like alter your mental state so that you might start getting more competitive than you should be.

Jeff:  That’s always a risk.

Pencil Pusher

Jun 01 2010 Intro

Dale used to be a police officer. He decided to get a calmer, safer job. Now he works from a desk. Working a desk job seems like the most harmless thing in the world. But Dale is having some problems with the life of a pencil pusher. A pencil pusher (also sometimes called a paper pusher) is a person who works in an office and doesn’t do anything very exciting. It’s not really a compliment to call someone a pencil pusher, but it’s certainly not a terrible thing to be. That is, unless you’re Dale.

new words
Desk Job:a job where you work in an office
Pencil Pusher:someone who works a boring job in an office

Watch as Dale discusses his concerns about working a desk job with Mason, the office janitor.
                                                Dialogue
 Mason: Hey, Dale!
Dale: Hey! Oh, wow! Are you having the same problem I am? Mason: Problem?
Dale: Ever since I became a pencil pusher I’ve been stuck at this desk all day, and I swear it’s killing my body.
Mason: Killing you! Hold on, buddy, let me check out this desk for you.
Dale: Yeah, check it out, I think it’s the desk. Mason: Well, the desk seems to be in order. Hold on, hold on, let me check out this chair for you. Why don’t you…
Dale: Ah! Mason: Try mopping! Mopping is great for your health, man! Why don’t you give that a try? Sweep up a little bit! There’s a spot over there that you missed.
Dale: Why don’t you do a couple of reports there for me? This is feeling great.
Mason: Hold on, I’m getting a crick over here! I think there’s something wrong with this pencil pushing thing! I need to be broom pushing! You sit down there and deal with your back problem. I’ve got floors to clean, man, floors to clean.
Dale: I used to be in great shape, now I’m just a pencil pusher! Jason, are you busy?
Jason: Well, I’m not terribly busy.
Dale: Oh, good! Can you just do a report for me?
Jason: You want me to do it for you? Dale: Yeah, well, you don’t really have to do it, you just have to type it. Because, look, I’m really not in good shape anymore, I have this carpal tunnel, it’s killing me. This desk job is killing me. Jason: I think you can type it, Dale. I think you’re being a bit of a hypochondriac. Maybe you miss your old job and how exciting it was. Just having a hard time being a pencil pusher?
Dale: Come on, man, just type the report for me! Just type it! I’m- I’m cured! I’m absolutely cured! Jason: What do you know!

   Today's Lesson

 30Seconds to Mars

May 24 2010
Intro

Most people would be satisfied if they could make millions doing just

one thing, let alone two. But Jared Leto was already a successful actor

before he started his second career as a musician. His band 30 Seconds

to Mars has put out three albums, including the most recent, This Is
War

It’s hard to know if Leto’s band is famous in its own right, or only

because Leto is famous. Either way, it must be fun to be a movie star

and a rock star. Find out if Beren and Ella think Leto is a true
Renaissance man
Dialogue
Beren: So do you know anything about 30 Seconds to Mars? It’s that

Jared Leto band?

Ella:  That’s about the extent of it. And supposedly there was some

giant controversy with the…their contract. That’s about all I know

about them.

Beren:  Oh, what happened?

Ella:  Well, supposedly, they were supposed to do three records, and

then there was some type of settlement, so now they just put out their

new record just to fulfill that last contract or something.

Beren:  That’s interesting that they got sued for not releasing their

album, because these days people don’t really sell that many records.

Do you know how much they got sued for?

Ella:  Um, supposedly 30 million. You know, chump change.

Beren:  Whoa. More than they would ever probably make selling the

record. That’s interesting. That’s smart business.

Ella:  Yeah.

Beren:  It’s always interesting when actors decide to start playing

music, or you know, maybe he played music before, but it’s funny that

now his career…he’s probably more well-known at this point for his

music, or for being in a kind of bad band, than being a good actor.

Ella:  Yeah, exactly. He probably did it ‘cause you know, he’d probably

have people who were fans of his movies be interested in his music just

for that fact, you know?

Beren:  Totally.

Ella:  Girls who are like “Oh, I’ll pay 30 dollars to go see him, even

if I don’t like the music.”
Discussion
Both Beren and Ella only know about the band 30 Seconds to Mars because

Jared Leto is in it. Leto is a famous actor who first became known for

his role on the cult TV show My So-Called Life.

Ella says that 30 Seconds to Mars recently got sued by their record

label for failing to put out an album they had promised to make. Beren

says that records don’t make a lot of money anymore. Eventually the

band did put out the promised album, This Is War.

Beren thinks Jared Leto is now more well known for being in a band than

for being an actor. But Ella thinks he only started putting out albums

because he knew people would buy them since he was already famous.

Do you think it is better to try to develop multiple talents, or to

focus on just one thing? Do you know anyone who is a Renaissance man?

Did you know that Ebaby! met Jared Leto in Beijing? Watch the video!
Grammar Point
Adverbs
In her conversation with Beren, Ella often uses the word supposedly.

She says that supposedly there was a giant controversy with the band,

and they supposedly had to pay $30 million. Supposedly is an adverb

meaning “I guess,” “I believe,” or “as far as I know.”
